Volksmarch weekend brings record food donation
The giving hearts of Crazy Horse Volksmarch hikers and others keep growing.
Donations of food and funding for the KOTA Care & Share Food Drive set another record during the June 2-3 weekend walk up the Crazy Horse Memorial mountain carving in progress.
Monica Leitheiser, operations manager of the Feeding South Dakota food bank in Rapid City, said contributions during the two-day event totaled 21,691 pounds of food.
The Memorial’s visitors also donated $13,084.26, according to Memorial President-CEO Ruth Ziolkowski.
The 27th volksmarch drew 11,622 people, the largest turnout in three years.
Next year’s hike will be held June 1-2, 2013.
