Reminder: Autumn Volksmarch Sept. 29-30
It can happen.
Crazy Horse Memorial will offer the opportunity during the first “Crazy Horse Autumn Volksmarch” public hike to the largest carved portrait on Earth.
There is no pre-registration for the Sunday and Monday, Sept. 29 and 30, event. The Memorial’s entrance gates open at 6 a.m. both days and Crazy Horse will waive its admission fee for hikers giving three cans of food per person or a comparable funding donation to help the Feeding South Dakota food bank. Parking also is free; due to anticipated crowds, hikers can expect to park in grassy areas near the entrance. Free shuttle rides to and from the visitor complex will be available.
Hikers register at a special area on the upper level of the visitor complex parking lot. The hike fee collected by the sponsoring Black Hills chapter of the American Volkssport Association is $3 per person for all ages.
After registering, hikers can begin their adventure between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., but must be off the trail by 4 p.m. each day.
Hikers are welcome to also tour the visitor complex. Laughing Water Restaurant serves breakfast both days until 10 a.m.
