Last November 2011 blast
Memorial President-CEO Ruth Ziolkowski said despite winter cold and snow, mountain carvers are blasting nearly weekly. Most recently, Memorial visitors saw a 600-ton blast on Nov. 29 in an area 340 feet below the top of the carved Crazy Horse face.
Blocking out the artistic plan of sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski involves creating 11 horizontal work spaces called "benches." This last blast was on the 10th bench, meaning the horse's nose is 20 feet down.
