Annual Native Americans’ Day

The 33rd annual Native Americans’ Day celebrations at Crazy Horse Memorial® took place on October 9th, 2023, and the Memorial was buzzing with Native artists, speakers, and presenters interacting with thousands of visitors hailing from all over the world.

To kick off the day, the Native Americans’ Day Program hosted Dr. Jacob Weasel as the keynote speaker. Dr. Weasel, a trauma surgeon at Monument Health in Rapid City and the first recorded Native American to summit Mount Everest, shared a powerful message of realizing greatness in day-to-day life and the empowerment of Indigenous Peoples, particularly Indigenous Youth.

Weasel said, “True greatness is realized in the valley before it is ever realized on the mountaintop. Greatness is found in the decision and actions made again and again, to do the right thing, to invest in the lives of others, to serve rather than to be served, and to serve the world with compassion rather than disdain,” and continued by saying, “My message to Native people everywhere is that you are equally capable of achieving whatever you want in life... you are not disadvantaged by virtue of your heritage, but you are advantaged. You are strong, you are capable, and, if no one else believes, know that I believe in you.”
