Andrew Standing Soldier and Cecil Hobart Keith Collections
Andrew Standing Soldier (1917-1967) is a renowned Lakota visual artist, recognized for his depictions of contemporary Native live in the mid-20 th century. Standing Soldier’s works have special significance to Crazy Horse Memorial as he and his family lived on the campus the first two years after sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski arrived in the Black Hills to begin work on the Mountain. Andrew painted the first tipis erected at the mountain.
Raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and a student at the Oglala Community High School, Standing Soldier was encouraged by his teachers to study mural painting under Olaf Nordmark, a federal artist-in-residence in Pine Ridge during the 1930s. At age 22 he was awarded a major prize for a watercolor submitted to the United States Pavilion at the 1939 World's Fair in New York. The Indian Museum of North America has several dozen works by Andrew Standing Soldier on display.
Standing Soldier’s works are complemented by several paintings by his collaborator, renowned Lakota artists Cecil Hobart Keith (1922-1989). Keith became interested in art as a young boy growing up on the Pine Ridge Reservation near Martin, South Dakota. Keith is known for his detailed depictions of horses, with his work “Chief” considered his greatest achievement. While art was his passion, Keith also served for many years as the chief judge of the Oglala Tribe.
