David Humphreys Miller Heroes of Greasy Grass Collection
In 1930, at age 16 and with his parents’ blessing, David Humphreys Miller headed West for Indian Country. Wanting to learn more about the famed “Custer’s Last Stand,” Miller sought the surviving Native American veterans to interview them and to paint their portraits. This journey led Miller to learn 14 Indigenous languages and to travel extensively throughout the Dakotas, Montana, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Oklahoma with a suitcase full of paintbrushes.
The aged warriors had been leery of being painted or photographed prior to Miller’s arrival, but he was able to earn their trust and was eventually adopted into several Native American families. Miller ultimately finished 72 portraits of warriors who were present at The Battle of Greasy Grass (Battle of Little Bighorn or Custer’s Last Stand). Each of the 72 portraits reflects a deep sense of pride, honor, and respect for these gallant individuals. A close friend to Korczak Ziolkowski, Miller helped reunite the remaining eight surviving warriors at Crazy Horse Memorial® for its dedication on June 3, 1948. Prints of all 72 portraits are on display in The Indian Museum of North America along with other items and photographs pertaining to David Humphreys Miller. Each feature brief biographies of each warrior and quotes from Miller’s interviews with them. Both sets of Miller’s “Custer Survivors” prints were gifted to the Museum from Gerald Forsythe, a longtime friend to the Memorial and the Ziolkowski family.
