Tribal Flag Collection

The Indian Museum of North America (IMNA) has one of the largest tribal flag collections in the world. This important collection began in 1982 when the first flag was presented to Ruth Ziolkowski by the Oglala Sioux Tribe representatives following Korczak’s death. Since then, the collection has grown significantly, and now over 180 Indigenous Nations are represented, spanning across North America and including other Indigenous nations outside the continent.

Receiving a tribal flag is a great honor and their exhibition in the IMNA represents friendships and strong bonds with each Tribe represented. Currently displayed in the Native American Educational and Cultural Center (NAECC), this assemblage attests to the positive relations developed between the Museum and Tribal nations, while increasing awareness among visitors of the diverse heritages and living cultures of the Indigenous peoples of North America.

With 574 federally recognized tribes in the United States, and over 600 First Nations governments in Canada, our collection is far from complete. We still receive gifted flags from Tribal and First Nations, and this continued growth represents expanding harmonious relations with the Indigenous peoples of North America. Tribal representatives and interested donors may contact the Museum's Collection Manager at (605) 673-4681, for more information on how to donate their tribal flag to the Museum.
