Educator of the Year Nomination Form

Jim and Betty (BJ)

Jim and Betty (BJ) both grew up in Western New York, just south of the Rochester area. BJ is a descendant of Native American tribes that were dissolved over the years into the Iroquois. Jim is very compassionate in the fight for justice for Natives. Jim had a career at the Kodak Company and BJ in a local hospital as a certified medical technician and later in art galleries. They relocated to Florida to be with Jim's aging parents and stayed. Now, they both work as docents at both the James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art and the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg.

The Ebersolds first trip to South Dakota was in 2009 and they visited Crazy Horse that year, and then again in 2011 and 2022. To them, the Memorial represents long-overdue recognition to the plight and contributions of Native Americans and Indigenous peoples to the history of what we now call the United States. There is a forever reminder of great Native Americans in Crazy Horse.

“Jim and BJ are among many Crazy Horse supporters whose thirst for knowledge knows no bounds,” said Regional Stewardship Officer and current Interim Director of Development Kirk David. “Each time we visit we share new found historical knowledge about Crazy Horse. It is always a joy to visit with supporters who carry their passion for art and history.”

Recently, BJ rode her Suzuki Intruder to South Dakota and spent the month of June in the Black Hills, visiting the Memorial more than 10 times. She explored unseen areas of the museum and now has a greater appreciation for the depth of our collection on display. Jim joined her for a couple weeks as she attended a convention in Rapid City for the Motor Maids, one of the first national groups of female motorcyclists in the country. The group also made a trip to the Memorial to view the Mountain and Museums and enjoyed a luncheon in the Laughing Water Restaurant®.

As members of the Dreamkeepers Society, the Ebersolds have pledged an estate gift to the Memorial upon their passing.
