The Perry Family

Recently, relatives of the late Martin “Marty” H. Perry of North Carolina (1958-2020) visited Crazy Horse Memorial® for the first time in early April 2023. Fourteen members, including Marty’s three brothers (Matt, Dave and Nate) plus nieces and nephews braved a blizzard that dumped nearly two feet of snow in the area. The highlight of their trip was the visit to Crazy Horse to tour the museums and gift shop, a bus ride to the base of the mountain, and the ultimate van ride to the top of the mountain.

You may remember reading about the Perry Family in the 2021 Fall/Winter edition of Progress. Marty was injured in an automobile accident which confined him to a wheel chair as a quadriplegic at a young age. Despite his injuries and suffering, he never complained. His relatives call him their hero and their inspiration.

Marty lived a frugal life and upon his death in 2020, he shared his life’s accumulation with several organizations, including a sizeable gift to Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation (shared between the Indian University of North America and the mountain carving). Through his lifetime he had always had an interest in the Native American spirit. The Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation is so grateful for his transformative gift that will fund student support in perpetuity at the Indian University of North America® and towards the mountain carving effort. Marty’s name is now on our “Hall of Heroes,” which permanently honors donors of $1 million or more and is on display outside the Visitor Center. His name is also listed on the computer kiosk's “virtual donor wall” throughout the complex acknowledging our generous supporters.
