Esperanza Hartman

Esperanza Hartman is a former 7TH GEN.® participant in the Crazy Horse Program. Since her 7TH GEN.® participation in 2018 and 2019, she has graduated Magna Cum Laude from Black Hills State University in 2022, earning her Bachelor’s of Science in Sociology with a minor in History. She is currently attending the University of Oklahoma, pursuing her Master of Legal Studies in Indigenous Peoples Law. She is set to earn her Master’s in May of 2024. Esperanza currently works at Mahpiya Luta Owayawa (Red Cloud Indian School) as the Lakota Cultural Foods Coordinator, where she has the opportunity to learn about traditional uses of plants and pass on these teachings to K-12 students. Her interests include playing guitar, reading horror novels, writing, or playing games like Animal Crossing.

When asked for words of encouragement to current and upcoming college students, she says, “Finish what you start. Even if you have to take a break, take a step back, make sure you go back and finish. Believe that you can accomplish anything.” Esperanza, herself, had to take a semester off during her undergraduate, but went back to graduate. She also emphasizes ACP - Active Class Presence - an emphasis in the Crazy Horse Program. She recommends a planner or a notebook to create a schedule reminiscent of the kind she was taught to make during the program.

And finally, she employs one of Charlie Luecke’s favorite sayings that’s stuck with her for the past five years - Carpe Diem!
